What distinguishes laser cutting of titanium at HAILTEC?

Quality of cut titanium foils and sheets

The production precise laser cuts Titanium is our specialty. We use QCW pulsed fiber lasers and Nd:YAG laser systems on precision systems from DMG MORI and Trumpf. These laser sources introduce minimal energy into the material or component. Low heat means minimal distortion and enables the finest cuts. Using ultra-fine laser cutting systems and state-of-the-art beam sources, we produce the finest cuts with a gap width of 0,03 mm or less. Tolerances depend on the sheet thickness and the cutting contour and are in the range of +/- 0,01 mm.

Which titanium alloys are suitable for precision laser cutting?

There are various types of titanium sheet, each made of different alloys and offering varying strengths and durability. This overview provides you with the most commonly processed titanium alloys that HAILTEC uses for titanium laser cutting. We always have many of them in stock, naturally with material test certificates. We can also source special alloys upon request, or you can simply provide us with the material.

Pure titanium grades 1 to 5. These alloys are extremely corrosion-resistant and highly cold-formable. Furthermore, their low thermal expansion leads to lower heat-induced stresses compared to other metallic materials. Due to their excellent biocompatibility, this material is also widely used in the medical field. Typical applications include the chemical and mechanical engineering industries, as well as aircraft components due to the material's high formability.

General information about titanium

Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a transition metal and forms refractory alloys with other metallic elements. Titanium's properties are similar to those of iron and vanadium, although it is less reactive. Titanium is an abundant element and the second most abundant metallic core component in the Earth. Most titanium ores also contain traces of iron, magnesium, and calcium. Titanium is an important element for industry, especially in aerospace engineering, the chemical industry, and medical technology.

William Gregor discovered titanium in England in 1791. Heinrich Klaproth, the German chemist, also discovered it in rutile ore in 1795. Klaproth named the element after the Greek gods, the Titans.
Titanium is extracted from ilmenite or rutile using a complex manufacturing process. In 2008, titanium cost approximately 12.000 euros per ton.

Titanium alloys are metal compounds consisting primarily of titanium and a variety of other additives. These alloys are often classified according to the American ASTM standard into grades 1 to 35, with the grade classification based on the alloy's varying composition. For example, grades 1 to 4 refer to a pure titanium alloy, while higher grades contain a variety of titanium dioxide and other elements.

Can titanium be laser cut?

Titanium is not only particularly biocompatible and corrosion-resistant, but also has a very good strength-to-density ratio. Titanium can be processed very precisely and with exceptional fineness using pulsed fiber lasers with a wavelength of 1030 nm. Argon, a non-reactive gas, is typically used as the cutting gas to achieve a perfect cut with minimal heat input. HAILTEC can laser cut titanium from 0,05 mm to 5 mm using various laser sources.

Laser cutting of titanium is considered one of the most complex and technically demanding materials processing techniques. Due to its chemical and physical properties, titanium is often used for intricate components in high-stress applications. Because laser beams are highly concentrated and targeted, they can produce very fine shapes and structures that traditional cutting cannot. It is possible to create the finest details or complex structures at high speed, ensuring precise processing. Furthermore, unwanted sparks and deformations can be avoided by eliminating mechanical processes. This process enables an extremely precise and smooth surface, which in turn enables exact assembly and use in high-stress applications. Laser cutting of titanium is one of the most versatile materials processing techniques, enabling very precise shaping while preserving the material's mechanical properties.

In which industries is titanium used?

Titanium is widely used in the aerospace, automotive, and chemical industries due to its high strength, low weight, and safety considerations. Thanks to its characteristic properties, such as high strength and corrosion resistance, titanium is a highly useful material for a variety of applications. Its ability to withstand external temperatures and strong mechanical stress also makes it a highly valuable material. Titanium machining is performed using the latest CNC technology. This technology allows for high-precision machining of components and the production of customized solutions to meet specific customer requirements using standardized machining parameters.

Is laser cutting of titanium suitable for medical technology?

Titanium is a highly valuable material used in various medical applications. It is lightweight, biocompatible, and strong, offering high resistance to biological aggression due to its immunity to corrosive environments and good physiological properties. Furthermore, it is hypoallergenic and therefore widely used and valued in medical technology. Thanks to its low density and thermal conductivity, titanium can be used for a wide variety of medical instruments and devices, as well as implants. It also exhibits high dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, and resistance to chemical substances. Thus, titanium can contribute to greater safety during surgical procedures while increasing the durability of medical devices. Therefore, it is not surprising that many medical applications involve the use of titanium.

Which is better: titanium laser cutting or waterjet cutting?

Whether a material is laser cutting or waterjet cutting depends entirely on its material properties and requirements. Whenever weak points appear in laser cutting technology, the Micro waterjet cutting usually the better alternative.
